The Government of Ghana through the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) plans to extend its Covid-19 relief package to Ghanaian athletes for another six months.
According to sources, YEA and the Ministry of Youth and Sports will sign an extension agreement with the National Sports Authority (NSA) of the existing financial support package for One thousand (1,000) “Elite Athletes ” for another six months on Wednesday, April 7.
In June 2020, the period which had Covid-19 was at its peak in Ghana and sporting activities coming to an abrupt halt which affected athletes source of funding, the Government of Ghana through its Ministry of Youth and Sports and YEA, signed a six months agreement of supporting Ghanaian athletes numbering 1,000.
Then sector minister, Isaac Asiamah in a presser highlighted the plan for initiative.
“Plans are far advanced to secure funds through the YEA to support athletes across the country affected by the COVID-19 pandemic to mitigate their plight.”
In the agreement, the athletes were expected to receive a monthly stipend of GHC 500,00
This extension of agreement when signed will see athletes receive a similar amount of GHC 500, monthly stipend.
