It is rather unfortunate for many Ghanaians to use English as a measure of intelligence whereas custodians of the language are even fallible to the second most spoken language on planet earth.
The honourable member of Parliament for the good people of Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson is currently trending on social media for the wrong reasons because many netizens believe she is not fit for purpose because of how she fumbled at the vetting to become the next minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture.
I beg to differ with the greatest of respect to anyone who thinks otherwise. This is a minister whose achievement at the novel ministry of Special Development Initiatives is unprecedented in the history of Ghanaian politics.
There hasn’t been any government of Ghana since Adam, who was able to procure at most 100 ambulances for the health sector of this country. Mind you, this honourable woman, Hawa Koomson rose through the ranks of a Women Organiser in her constituency, became a parliamentary candidate and won the seat from the NDC.
Mavis Hawa Koomson has successfully retained her seat two consecutive times and was a cabinet minister during Akufo-Addo’s first term as president. I tell you what, this is no mean achievement and you must possess certain qualities to be a part of the cabinet especially with a ministry that was created from nowhere to execute a Herculean task.
Granted without admitting that she couldn’t answer some simple questions at the vetting, this is a woman who was tasked by the President to oversee one of the flagship policies of the government by implementing the 1 village 1 dam policy which has many testimonies to her credit.
The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture remains one of the critical ministries which has over the years contributed immensely, accounting for 4.5 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), 12 per cent of the agriculture GDP and 10 per cent of the workforce.
President Akufo-Addo in his wisdom needs someone good at executing a peculiar task within a certain time frame to achieve the target of the government. A lot of new ministries were created ame have served its purposes but one that rings a bell in the minds of people is Special Development Initiatives which has everything to show that it has served a befitting purpose.
Ladies and gentlemen, I introduce to you, Mavis Hawa Koomson who has gallantly retained her seat twice against all odds and accrued out the vision of the President to meet some basic needs of the Ghanaian people.
