Karela United Head Coach Johnson Smith has expressed worries on how supporters of Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak influence the selection of home based players into the national team the Black Stars.
During an interview on Sports nite show on Asempa FM with Enoch Kwasi Wolanyo Wallace, he said, “this time, the selection of players to the national team is based on the foreign players. Apart from the monitoring, it is all about Hearts and Kotoko because their supporters put pressure on the coach and they (the authorities) also listen to them.
if you don’t pick their player, they will talk. In Karela United, no one will say anything if you don’t hand a call up to their players”.
Coach Smith also mentioned that if the national team is playing a match at the Accra Sports Stadium and the coach fields a Kotoko player and not a Hearts player, you realize that the Hearts supporters will chant against the team; and vice-versa at the Kumasi Baba Yara Sports stadium. These are the only clubs whose players also play for Black Stars.
“They have to broaden their scout to select players from various clubs across the country. The local players also need exposure because they also want to play in Europe”, he stated.
Only three home based players have made the provisional 29 man squad for the Black Stars and these players are from the two biggest clubs; Hearts and Kotoko.
