A police officer has been caught on a CCTV stealing coins from a Teller’s drawer at a bank where he was assigned to provide security to protect lives and properties.
In a report cited by our news desk, the stealing occurred at the Enyan Denkyira Rural Bank in Ajumako, a neighbouring town of Mankessim in the Central Region where Sargent George Amankwa has been indicted for his uncouth deed.
According to the report, during a routine audit check on tellers of the bank, they noticed that two tellers namely Hannah Ekua Obenewaa Appiah and Scholarship Assifuah Ninson could not respectively account for cash (coins) of GHC 490 and 200 being their sales after business.
However, the two tellers were contacted and they insisted that they successfully balanced their accounts and could not fathom how the shortages occurred within the period.
It is in light of this that the denial prompted the management of the bank to replay the CCTV installed within the precincts of the bank to unearth the mystery surrounding the shortage and there, they noticed No 39149 G/ Sgt George Amankwa of Ajumako Police station who was on duty at the said bank was responsible for the stealing.
The manager of the bank, Joseph Kobina Bentum proceeded with a letter to the District Commander in Ajumako indicating that Sgt. George Amankwa has been caught on CCTV footage pilfering the said amount which was in coins from the drawers of the cages of the two tellers.
The suspect was therefore invited by the Divisional Police Commander ACP Owuahene Agyei Acheampong and in the presence of the Divisional Crime Officer DSP Awampaga Robert confessed having stolen the amount but made use of it. Meanwhile, the suspect has been detained in custody after investigation caution statement was obtained from him.
