Ex-Anderlecht star and former Black Stars player, Nii Odartey Lamptey has added his voice in the ongoing captaincy issues regarding stripping Asamoah Gyan as a captain and handing it over to Dede Ayew.
During an interview on Accra based radio station Happy FM, he said “…for me the timing was wrong. This should have been done six month or a year ago to settle this captaincy problem. But doing it a month before a tournament will be a tag to distort the team in many ways”.
“In this tournament, that will be the talking point surrounding the team. And if we don’t take care, it will affect the team’s performance”.
He continued that if we wanted to show him respect, we should have come back from the tournament and given him a befitting farewell; considering the things he has done for Ghana. He has broken a lot of records. Hence, this isn’t the time we do this to him. We need to honour him in a way that other players will also give their all to serve Ghana”.
When asked what the role of general captain in a team is, he said “…well, from my experience and general knowledge in football, I haven’t seen any general captain role in Europe. If you have served the team for long, they will recognize, appreciate and honor you for everyone to know that you have served the team for long”.
Head coach James Kwasi Appiah has named Dede Ayew as substantive captain, Kwodwo Asamoah as his deputy and Asamoah Gyan as general captain for the Black stars.
Societywatch.net can confidently announce that this tournament will be Asamoah Gyans’ final tournament for Ghana.
